About the Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) Program
LIS has implemented an Education for Sustainable Development program into the curriculum. ESD encourages changes in knowledge, skills, values and attitudes to enable a more sustainable and just society for all. It empowers learners to make informed decisions and take responsible actions towards environmental integrity, economic viability, a just society, and healthy living practices.
The LIS ESD program is based on the UN Agenda 2030 and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals and includes an important component on Socio-Emotional Learning. Within this program, our students will develop the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values necessary to address sustainable development challenges. By working on a holistic approach to Sustainable Development, and with the involvement of parents and the local community, LIS aims at forming responsible citizens committed to a better world and a healthier self.
At LIS we believe in learning as a holistic process that goes beyond academic milestones. We want our students to use their brain, hearts, and hands to develop significant connections. We want them to put their knowledge into practice and act in ways that generate positive actions. We aim at nurturing a generation of students that are kind and empathetic to themselves, others, and the world.
Healthy Eating Benefits: Why Nutrition Matters at School AND at Home
“Food directly affects students’ health, learning, and lifetime wellness habits.”
- Improves learning: Healthy food is scientifically proven to boost students’ concentration, focus and cognitive function. A vast body of research shows that improved nutrition in schools leads to increased focus and attention, improved test scores and better classroom behaviour.
- Inspires healthy habits and lifestyle: Nutritious food helps students develop lifelong healthy eating habits. This has far reaching benefits and impacts on overall health mentally and physically. By implementing healthy eating practices at school, we recognize the importance of valuing a students’ health and well-being.
- Drives change in the marketplace: There is an opportunity for communities, especially schools, to drive the change they want to see in the world. As parents and educators, we have a responsibility to support businesses offering healthy foods to help create sustainable changes in the consumer markets.
Healthy Snack/Lunch Menus & Collaboration at Home
LIS has adapted our lunch and snack menus to better suit the nutritional needs of our students. A large part of our culture at LIS is the importance of overall health with regards to both physical and emotional development. Teachers and parents alike have seen the differences and positive impacts that proper nutrition has on our students.
It is encouraged that parents collaborate with the school in offering healthy food to their children at home and to refrain from bringing unhealthy food to school. In order to get the best results, we want the message we are trying to portray to students to be consistent.
